Description:
The Corporate Services and Facilities Department (CSF) of the International Monetary Fund is looking to fill the position of Section Chief of the Spanish and Portuguese Section in Language Services.
Additionally, under the supervision and guidance of the Head of Language Services and the Chief Translator, the Section Chief manages a section which provides translation and related services into Portuguese and Spanish, mostly from English, but occasionally also from French.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, supervise, and coordinate the Section’s activities, including translation, revision, proofreading, and editing, as necessary to produce high-quality translations and publications.
- Similarly, supervise, motivate, evaluate and assess performance of staff in the Section.
- Also, assign work and establish priorities to meet deadlines.
- Perform translation and revision as necessary.
- Likewise, determine resource needs and actively participate in the recruitment of regular and contractual staff. Identify and recruit freelance translators as needed.
- Act as authority on language in the Section, including terminology
- Furthermore, ensure that appropriate quality control measures are established and applied.
- Liaise with IMF Departments and Offices to address service needs and resolve translation-related issues.
- Similarly, evaluate the effectiveness of current language software systems. Assess future language technology and training needs and formulate related strategies.
Qualifications
Educational development, typically acquired by the completion of a relevant advanced university degree, supplemented by a minimum of 8 years of professional work experience in translation/revision of economic, financial, legal, and statistical material, or equivalent. Also, experience of working in international institutions and familiarity with different areas of language operations will be considered an asset.
Target language: Portuguese and/or Spanish. Also, high level of written and spoken proficiency in Portuguese and/or Spanish as a native language, with sensitivity to the different geographical variants of each language. Source languages: mostly English. Excellent organizational and management abilities. Similarly, strong interpersonal and communications skills; ability to work as part of a team. Likewise, ability to communicate effectively with staff and officials at all levels in a multicultural environment.
High level of competence in an automated environment using networked workstations for translation, revision, and administrative and supervisory functions. Deep understanding of language systems, including Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, and ability to advise on language systems’ functionality and developments. Also, short-listed candidates may be required to take a written examination. Furthermore, finalists must participate in a panel interview.
