Funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York has made available three (3) full time doctoral fellowships, and 4 post-doctoral fellowships intended for outstanding scholars who wish to pursue an academic career. This is a residential fellowship (barring time in the field) and will provide funding renewable for up to four years, on condition of satisfactory annual progress and availability of funds.

Eligibility Criteria
Ph.D.:
- A Masters’s degree in a relevant discipline within social sciences, humanities, law, economics, STS.
- Also, an interest in undertaking doctoral research on AI and 4IR in one of six African regions (North, East, West, Central, Southern, and Lusophone Africa).
- Interest in at least one of HUMA’s Research Thematic Clusters.
- Likewise, in developing a national and international standing as a scholar.
- Interest in policy advice, media, and public engagement.
- Also, the ability to present complex issues in a readable form for both academic and non-academic audiences.
- Additionally, excellent analytical and research skills including the use of quantitative and/or qualitative research techniques.
Post-doctorate:
- A Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline within social sciences, humanities, Law, Economics, or STS.
- Also, demonstrable interest in undertaking post-doctoral research and teaching on AI and 4IR in one of six African regions
- Likewise, demonstrated interest in at least one of HUMA’s Research Thematic Clusters.
- Also, interest in building a national and international standing as a scholar.
- Demonstrable interest in policy advice, media, and public engagement.
- Additionally, the ability to present complex issues in a readable form for both academic and non-academic audiences.

Value of Award:
- Ph.D.: The value of the Fellowships is fixed at R200, 000 per annum. The Fellowships carry no benefits and are compliant with the SARS rules for tax exemption.
- Postdoctorate: The value of the Fellowships is fixed at R300, 000 per annum. The Fellowships carry no benefits and are compliant with the SARS rules for tax exemption
