Next week I’m flying through IST for the first time, and I’m already a little nervous—I’ve read that it’s one of the largest airports in the world and it’s easy to get lost there. I have a two-and-a-half-hour layover, and I’m afraid I’ll spend the whole time looking for the right gate instead of getting a proper meal and resting.

I have one more question. After landing, I need to find a gate for my connecting flight. Are there clear signs or an app to help you navigate the terminal? I’ve heard that some major airports have their own apps with maps that provide step-by-step directions. Is there something like that at IST? Also, is there a difference between the domestic and international transfer areas? My first flight is domestic with Turkish Airlines, and my second flight is international. Does that mean there’s an additional security check between the areas?

The first time I went to Istanbul International Airport, I was nervous, too. I arrived early because I was afraid of getting lost. I was worrying for nothing. For an airport of that size, it’s surprisingly easy to navigate. There are signs at every turn, and they’re all in English. If you’re still worried, check out the guide on the website: https://istanbul-international-ist-airport.com/ . It lays everything out, locations of gates, restaurants, and rest areas. As for moving between the domestic and international terminals, there’s an additional passport control, and you should plan for about thirty minutes for that. I usually plan two and a half hours for a layover like this, which is plenty of time as long as you don’t get held up at security. Which airline is your connecting flight with?
