Resolve a dispute about gasoline boats. My grandfather and I got into an argument about riding in motorboats. He says that these boats were more dangerous in the past due to the risk of fire, but that risk no longer exists. I insist that there is still a possibility that a boat could catch fire because of the gasoline.

How old is your grandfather? Does he go boating often? I think you two are arguing about different things. Your grandfather is probably saying that boats used to be built without ventilation systems, so carbon monoxide would accumulate and easily ignite. The GetBoat article describes boats built before 1981 in detail: https://blog.getboat.com/travel-tips-advice/inboard-gasoline-boats-ventilation-system-requirements/ . I think your grandfather is saying that these boats didn’t have extra fans. In general, though, you are right that gasoline can ignite instantly.
