Overview

The University of Sunderland is a university located in Sunderland in the North East of England. Its predecessor, Sunderland Technical College, was established as a municipal training college in 1901. It gained university status in 1992. It now has campuses in Sunderland, London and Hong Kong. The university has 13,020 students and was one of six universities to be short-listed for ‘University of the Year’ in the Times Higher Education Supplement Awards 2012.

Established as Sunderland Technical College in 1901, it changed to Sunderland Polytechnic in 1969. After the passage of the Further and Higher Education Act 1992, the polytechnic gained university status.

As of the 2019 League Table Rankings by The Complete University Guide, The University of Sunderland is ranked 99th in the UK. It is Silver rated in Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) for delivering high-quality teaching, learning and outcomes for their students, and consistently exceeding “rigorous national quality requirements” for higher education in the UK.
