Overview

The University of Queensland (UQ or Queensland University) is a public research university located primarily in Brisbane, the capital city of the Australian state of Queensland. Founded in 1909 by the Queensland parliament, UQ is one of the six sandstone universities, an informal designation of the oldest university in each state.

The University of Queensland maintains a number of support and student services. The campuses at St Lucia and Gatton have Student Centres which provide information and support services. The UQ Union is the peak student representation body that coordinates various student services and activities, including over 190 affiliated clubs and societies.

The learning experience of students at UQ is enriched by first class services and facilities, an excellent reputation for teaching quality and exciting research and international study opportunities. UQ is a large university where students can choose from the largest high quality range of undergraduate programs in Queensland 400 undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs.

The University of Queensland has comprehensive support programs for overseas students. Even before students come to Australia, the University already offers a pre-departure webinar discussing things such as organizing passport, visa, health insurance, plane tickets and airport pickup and planning accommodation and finances. To make the transition to a new country and culture easier, UQ can meet new students at the Brisbane domestic or international airports and take them to their temporary or permanent accommodation.

To prepare students with university life, the UQ offers orientations and briefings. English language support, international student activities and mentoring programs are also offered. UQ also has dedicated support volunteers, available to discuss with students the working conditions in Australia, the requirements to bring their families and other concerns and queries.

UQ has a wide variety of scholarships available for every student. Undergraduate, postgraduate and research by higher degree scholarships are available in different areas of study so students can choose which best suits them. UQ awards these scholarships based on academic merit, sports involvement, economic status and extracurricular activities.

The university also offers scholarships for international students who want to study undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at UQ. Most international scholarships are given to students on the basis of academic performance. External scholarships sponsored by the Australian government, private organizations and different industries are as well available at the university.
